What follows is only hearsay; I met at least one of the board mods at an anti-cult meetup in California. They described the Portland/Seattle so called activist scene one of the worst snakepits outside Scientology. In that vein they were certain that was the reason the new Portland COS Org was able to open without protest. and a strong suspicion the original anti Scientology protest group had been taken over/stolen/coopted by Tea Partiers during the Occupy protests. Anyway, one person who no foul words were spared for was Rebecca Nay. "Becky" was the one who set them up to be phished, seriously underestimating the combined tech skills of the mods. Becky had also lied on at least once, trolled anonymously, and used Ed as her White Knight. When Becky was confronted she did a fast fade. Last heard she was back in Utah, raising more questions; what trans-woman CHOOSES to move back to Utah? Someone worried about pending legal action? And it doesn't take much tech skills to skim the usual suspects FB friend lists to find Nay. Like this one: www.facebook.com/per.fagerengThey were divided about Ed. The guy I talked with thought Ed had emotional damage from his time with KBOO. Cultish groups go out of their way to recruit and keep compliant people with bad critical thinking skills. That could explain why he (assuming this is him and not a bot or troll) is dense about the need to shut KBOO down and is distracted by "saving community radio". Community radio is not even the subject, but he's stuck there. Maybe if he helped shut it down, or at least drove off/arrested the grifters and forced an outside audit(which, let's be real would probably shut it down), then he'd have to admit the dream was a lie to line the KBOO group's pockets. The harsher interpretation of other mods is yes, Kraus is damaged, but he played them from the start. Or was compromised/blackmailed at some later date. When he's not fishing for personal information, he's cheerleadering or tone policing. All passive actions. It has not helped his case he refuses to do the most basic actions to involve law enforcement or regulators. FWIW |

I'm not buying this "poor Ed is a victim of a cult and so confuzzled" angle. Not saying it isn't possible. I'm just not convinced. Ed 's had many chances and blew them all. Trolling with Hadrian was the final straw.

Folks, while I was still trying to do something good there (you say being horribly damaged) we would have endless meetings where one faction would describe how KBOO needed to include more people and more viewpoints, to become truly "community" radio, another faction would passionately argue that KBOO had to stay just the same and served a critical need that 0.2 percent of Portland needed, and everyone pondered together that terrestrial radio wasn't being listened to by the next generation and the entire concept might collapse.
We've seen commercial radio collapse totally, and most folks for better or worse get news and information from websites and Facebook. Over ten years ago we saw this and were trying to figure out how to make radio relevant to the next generation. Some LPFM have started up, get better ratings with 70 watts of power than KBOO with it's thousands, and I'm glad I helped get those off the ground.
But KBOO is a dinosaur, and the same folks with the same grey hair run the same station with the same programs and same crappy management issues. It will eventually self collapse. It won't matter, as no one is or will be listening.
Radio as a medium is on it's last legs. That's what all the radio professionals who know what they're doing and have put their heart and soul into either non profit or commercial radio have been saying for years. I can't save KBOO, because I can't save traditional media from the same forces.
The real issue is that the internet has dispersed us all into our information silos, and there no longer are any curated, professional media outlets. Here in PDX, OPB is the only major exception, and it's doing great. We don't even have a major daily newspaper anymore.
I'm not an anarchist, I'm not ANTIFA, I'm just a regular guy trying to get though each day and do something incremental to make the world around me a little better.
Good luck to you all with your delusional beliefs, one thing I've learned years ago is some folks can't be helped.

I had a few minutes before going to work so I went again to the KBOO website and read the minutes from the two meetings in June (June 24 not yet posted).
Wow. Same shit, different year.
Apparently the BOD has multiple openings that are unfilled, there is no station manager, Ani has been put on paid leave (hooray!), the usual suspects are up in arms, and the union is being used as a blunt tool to try to force the remaining BOD into doing what the KKK folks want, to protect the positions of the usual KBOTS. Special meetings, the not-yellow blog ... it's all so amusing.

What was/is not reasonable is not doing everything to expose that toxic environment to people[law enforcement/regulators] who have the means to deal with these goons. That depends what you mean. They can't be helped with community radio? No, of course not. KBOO is a scam, community radio is just how they get $$$. Can be helped by exposing the scam and closing the station? Yes, there is still lots to do there, and it only can happen if outside forces make it happen. That needs things like docs, facts, evidence >>>> parties that can do stuff. First respected responsible members who didn't know. Oh, those are all gone? Then the press, government agencies and law enforcement. Do you really need someone to draw you a chart? No one ever expected you(or anyone) to expose/change/save KBOO/community radio all by yourself. If you ever felt you had to do that, something was already wrong; that's not how communities work. But the biggest mental block I'm observing is refusing to accept KBOO has such a strangle hold on community radio in your town, for anything else to take it's place, KBOO has to be destroyed. And you just can't help with that. I don't know that's a bad thing, but you need to be honest about it. (that's probably part of why people like lurk3r have trouble believing your narrative) |

Think about the current Federal government. Who is in charge? Think about Russian interference with our elections. Think about the FCC auctioning off more and more of the spectrum to make cell phone companies rich. Think about the morons actually in charge.
And you believe that someone in govt will give a crap to enforce FCC or non profit law on 0.2 percent market share KBOO? You're kidding, right?

Stop using anti government conspiracy crap as an excuse. The agencies might be under the Trump administration, but still plenty of people shuffling papers day to day who want to do their jobs.

What is your perceived concern? That the "government" is untrustworthy and vaguely sinister? Or that it's ineffective?
The first is a mindset controlling groups cultivate. If people believe they are being protected from a vast conspiracy, they're hesitant to reach outside for help. This is a type of brainwashing.
Concerns about ineffectiveness are understandable, but not an excuse not to do something. No one knows until they try.
I've made reports to the FTC and IRS. No idea what the follow up was. But I have private documentation and I've covered my ass.

I'm just one of three million people in the Portland Metro area who doesn't believe KBOO is worth anything. I won't do anything as I've moved on. Thank God I wasn't elected to the BOD, a higher power must have been protecting me. But it is amusing to check in here now and then and see the chaos continues.
Sounds like popcorn will be required again.
