Film screening plus panel on community radio See the film documentary about the world's oldest community radio station, "KPFA On The Air," Saturday, November 3, 7 pm, at the Hollywood Theater, at 4122 Northeast Sandy Blvd. Watch the trailer at www.pbs.org/pov/kpfaontheair/
KPFA community radio began broadcasting in Berkeley, California in April, 1949. Founded by a group of World War Two pacifists, the station's ideal was to create peace through dialogue among those with differing world views. Alan Watts, Langston Hughes, and Linus Pauling debated alongside Caspar Weinberger and folks from the John Birch Society. This documentary film traces the history of KPFA radio through the fifties McCarthyism, sixties anti-war efforts and civil rights struggles, all the way to contemporary KPFA staff and board clashes. After the film, you are invited to stay for a forty-five minute panel discussion with KBOO veterans Michael Wells, Per Fagerang and others as they recount their own KPFA and KBOO community radio historical anecdotes.
