What's going on at KBOO?
author: questioner
I've heard about a lot of controversy going on at KBOO over the past few years. Some of it sounds pretty serious, and I'm particularly concerned about what I've heard about their blocking of democratic processes, and member participation. what has everyone else heard....and what do you all think about it? What should we do about it?

Oh, that's right Obama is saying the same thing about other issues like BP, Immigration, Corparate bailouts . . . (The list grows)

There's two sides to KBOO -and they differ as day differs rom night,
On the bright side what they air indicates they believe in cutting back on corporate greed and corporate power.
On the dark side they indicate they don't believe democracy, peace, justice, free speech, gender equality when it comes to internal matters.
They will encourage street demonstrations on public issues, but internally they support the police chief's right to collect and absorm Nazi emblems and meorabilia, and they believ they have the right to have dissidents arrested. [ And notice how the Portland Alliance slipped the arrest word into the title of correspondence from a KBOO member while they removed any hint of that word from what the member actually wrote.

One of the things that has been happening at KBOO is a concerted effort from a few power hungry folks to take over the board of directors. They used the most undemocratic techniques of harrasment and intimidation -- that failing, they tried lawsuits.
KBOO won the legal battle but also lost a ton of money. Something like 50,000 dollars. That could have bought a lot of meals, a lot of microphones, done a lot of good. Now the station has to make budget cuts and extra fundraising efforts just to stay on the air.
If you browse around their website you'll find all the legal papers -- search for lawsuit. That's the meat of it.
No, KBOO doesn't block member participation. But folks at the station who have worked hard for years do tend to become resistant to folks coming in and trying to take over. Participation is one thing, demanding is another. KBOO is strong, been around longer than a lot of us.

You are right - Look Here, Alan Graf's article, "President of KBOO is an Nazi Apologist", should answer any question that a responsible Portland resident might want answered.

Time for a Recall Petition for Becky Chiao? 15.Jul.2010 05:05
the angry cook link
Many members are justifiably upset with Becky for her remarks on the air in defense of Capt. Mark Kruger. In reply to Alan Graf's July 8th article, "President of KBOO is an Nazi Apologist", one person left a comment under the pseudonym "No Longer a KBOO supporter". I think that many Portland residents are either disturbed by the information
Alan provided or they will be once they are informed. Becky - and some of her supporters on the Board may need replacing; perhaps we should draft more than one recall petition. Remember, too, elections are coming up - let's shake up the make-up of the present board.

I am reminding everyone that the team of banished people at KBOO have been there all along battling it out so that KBOO can be a nice place for everyone to work.
They were banished for pointing out serious injustices happening in that place where silence is complicity, and silence is practically ordered by the fact that every volunteer there is under the threat of being banished if they speak out.
The battle to stop the mean spirited, bullying, anger/abuse problems, total lack of accountability, anti-diversity actions going on in that hijacked place is being led by this dedicated group. They are fighting for everyone's rights and for KBOO to be a peaceful and happy place.
Sure, no one likes it when they are treated badly by the KBOO machine, but please, lets give some credit to the group which is actually doing something about it.
Apparently, this seems to anger the power seekers, as they are now--after 40+ years, crafting a banishment policy! And they are trying to block the banished folks from running for office!!! This is pretty historic! Why don't they just kill them, it may be a better way to silence them!
Just don't forget in all this discussion that the banished people are taking flack for everyone's benefit, and they stand for the marginalized voices, the underdog, minority viewpoints, etc. In short, they stand for the leading edge of all progressive movements, and they stand for the best of KBOO. Lets give credit where credit is due!
And KBOO folks, stop being afraid to speak, and convincing yourself that you shouldn't. The minute you stop speaking, that's the moment you become a cog in the machine.

The KBOO President is a Nazi sympathizer who makes statements on the KBOO air waves defending a policeman that is a self admitted Nazi lover!
The KBOO board attempted to cover up when their station manager attempted to sexually harass a volunteer!
The KBOO board removes elected board members because of different idealology and replaces then with their
own choice!
Ani Haines should be fired from KBOO.

kboo is in the process of becoming a collective 18.Jul.2010 18:43
anti-democratic? link
having been part of kboo for several years, i am surprised to hear that it is 'anti-democratic'. at kboo, people come in off the street, get free training, and get out with microphones and equipment within days of showing up - nowhere else, even other independent media outlets i've been part of, provide that kind of access for anybody's who's interested and willing to learn. it is truly awesome.
as for the lawsuit against kboo, it was absolutely insanely ridiculous, and the two guys who filed it - michael papadopalous and scott forrester - should be required to pay back kboo the 47,000 dollars it cost - because instead of taking it to trial (which they would have lost, and then been responsible for paying kboo's legal fees), they dropped the case the day before trial - exempting them from having to pay the legal fees for kboo.
want to know what their complaint was about kboo, which they felt was worth costing the station 47,000 bucks and wasting nearly a year of time? they say they didn't receive a copy of the station's membership list 11 months before a board election when they asked for the membership list, in order to fundraise (illegally) for themselves. they admit that they received a copy of the membership list several months later, but felt they needed to sue because they allegedly did not receive a copy of the list when they first asked for it.
If you don't believe that these two idiots would actually sue over something so frivolous and bizarre, then please read the lawsuit, because it clearly states that this is their reason for suing kboo:
www.kboo.fm/node/19744
As for the idea that 'dissenters have been banished' from kboo - it's also a ridiculous claim. the few volunteers that have been asked to leave kboo have only been asked to do so after attempts were made to get them to stop abusive behavior towards other volunteers. kboo truly does allow all comers, and has open doors (maybe even too much so, because some people come in to kboo with serious personal issues, and that is hard on everyone).
Right now the staff is actually trying to talk to other collectives around town and learn how to actually become a collective, with no station manager - unusual even among community radio stations.
it's bizarre how these two bullies - michael papadopalous and scott forrester - have managed to lie and convince people of their lies to the point that they will defend these two guys, who have done their utmost to destroy kboo, even as they claim to be valiantly saving it.
As for Becky Chiao working for the city as a risk management analyst, damn....that's fucked up. the kboo board should definitely look into it. if people think that becky speaks for kboo when she made her talk radio comment, i can tell you from someone who spends time there that nobody supports the statement she made, and lots of people at kboo are upset about it.
the kboo news and public affairs shows have done an awesome job covering police violence in the city, and following up when every other radio and tv station has left the story behind......
and challenging the city government, going to the meetings and asking the hard questions of city officials. and if you're interested in continuing to press the city, state, us and world officials on the issues that affect our lives, then come to kboo and volunteer! then you'll find out how great it is, instead of taking the word of two bitter, crazy men who believe that suing a radio station over not getting a membership list to do their own fundraising is something worth suing a cash-strapped non-profit over.
