Make no mistake, it's serious. But we also know Mitchell likes to unhelpfully fame the flames of tinfoil hysteria. Thought a thread to track the coverage and debunk potential exaggerations might be a good idea.

Just got off the phone with Dr. Henry Niman, Ph.D., talking about the Wuhan novel coronavirus outbreak. I didn't hear what I expected to hear, which would have been along the lines of "this is an interesting virus and we'll see what sort of impact it has." I mean, it is interesting (particularly to a recombination pioneer like Niman), but the salient point is that there is tremendous danger from this beast.
Years ago I would have tended to emphasize the danger--my philosophy was that there is such a tendency of the corporate press to collaborate in anti-panic efforts, that it was my duty, as a community-radio journalist, to ferret out the possibilities so that nonconformists and intellectuals could get the big picture. Indeed there was an anti-scientific and bigoted backlash to the 2009 flu pandemic, which erased the story of half a million people who died from it. So I was ready to hear that there is no big impact coming.
That is not the case. Wuhan is locked down, yes, but so is a giant cruise ship in Italy. The contagion graph is exponential.
It would appear that a rapidly mutating viral pneumonia is spreading worldwide, with a shocking mortality rate. It is particularly killing older people like me. There is no vaccine and people are dying while receiving the best and latest medical intervention techniques. Massive quarantines are in place and they are utterly failing.
This has every mark of a pandemic plague.
You must take precautions now, before supplies run out. You will need disinfectants, bleach, masks, easily prepared foods, a stockpile of your medicines, flu remedies, pet food, toilet paper, everything.
This is because everything is going to be difficult when the quarantines hit. It seems likely that there are going to be big, ugly, difficult quarantines in our future. Do something about it now if you can.
Edit: the audio link is live.

A reminder that masks won't work unless they're fitted (easy to learn online), don't usually fit kids/people with small faces, don't fit people with full facial hair (why firefighters have only 'staches), may not be available due to shortages (many made in China). The paper ones also have expiration dates

Available data is changing rapidly and is reflecting obvious government efforts to deny information, e.g. human-to-human transmission IS happening, thanks for nothing Beijing, and contagion is preceding symptoms, so never mind with the fever scans.

QAnon is saying that bogus MSM stuff the xtian pastors were selling in Africa will keep you safe; also cures autism & AIDS. It contains bleach so we'll see if it thins out that herd

...yeah, being older as well this is a serious concern.
Portland Is also an international shipping port, maybe not as large as Seattle, but still we receive freighters from Asia (including China) so we should be very concerned here (I checked port arrivals and there is currently a bulk freighter enroute from Lianyungang on the north China coast [about equidistant from both Wuhan and Beijing], that is expected to arrive next Wednesday).
Sadly stocking up is not easy when you are below the poverty line rent take half your monthly income, and live in a small place with not a lot of storage room.
With most viruses, people are contagious hours to a couple days before visible symptoms manifest which is what makes these diseases so insidious and dangerous.
