Re: Endorsement of Candidates for KBOO Foundation Board of Directors
--PLEASE SHARE—
Our committees -- made up of dozens of concerned KBOO volunteers, programmers, and active members -- have interviewed and endorsed five candidates for the four positions up for election next month (we know -- 5 candidates for 4 positions – we couldn’t narrow our choices down to just 4).
We believe these candidates have the talent, experience and track record to maintain and promote KBOO’s core values** --
Jennifer Davis, Adin Rogovin, Robin Ryan, Joe Uris, and Michael Wells
Please watch for your ballot which could arrive any time in August. At the latest, bring it to the Annual Membership Meeting on September 14th . If you do not get a ballot, check with KBOO to see if you are still a member. You can get a ballot anytime before the election, if you become or re-up your membership. Watch the KBOO.fm website for information on candidate interviews and any changes to meetings or the balloting.
IMPORTANT DATES:
Sunday, August 25th, 4pm -- Candidate Meet-and-Greet -- Peninsula Park, N. Albina at Ainsworth.
Saturday, September 14th, 11am -2pm – Annual Membership Meeting – Matt Dishman Community Center, 77 NE Knott
*We are members of the KBOO community who organized to challenge corporatization of KBOO. With your help and those of hundreds of others in the KBOO community, we have successfully persuaded our KBOO board to reaffirm its commitment to the membership and its core values. Positive changes include
• good faith labor negotiations with the union
• appointment of 4 board members who value membership input and feedback
• returning KBOO to its non-corporate governance structure
• improved communications between the board and the membership
We believe that KBOO is a membership organization and that members are entitled to voice, through its board and committees, in the decisions that affect its operation and programming. We applaud the efforts of the Programming Committee in considering whether or not to bring the Thom Hartmann show to KBOO.
** (from KBOO’s Programming Charter) “KBOO shall be a model of programming, filling needs that other media do not, providing programming to diverse communities and unserved or underserved groups. KBOO shall provide access and training to those communities.
“KBOO’s news and public affairs programming shall place an emphasis on providing a forum for unpopular, controversial, or neglected perspectives on important local, national, and international issues, reflecting KBOO’s values of peace, justice, democracy, human rights, multiculturalism, environmentalism, freedom of expression, and social change.
“KBOO’s arts, cultural, and music programming shall cover a wide spectrum of expression from traditional to experimental, and reflect the diverse cultures KBOO serves.
“KBOO shall strive for spontaneity and programming excellence, both in content and technique.”

But how did he know who the candidates were?
Jamie Partridge We knew who was running for the Board. We decided to interview only those we knew had a chance of getting our endorsement. We judged people on their track record, among other things...
Paula claims to to have known and she was on the board at the time:
Kboo Paula Let's refrain from any other further discussion please. I AM a Board member & I still don't know the official candidates. It's a very strong concern, but we need to let due process continue. Once the Nominating Committee releases the names, then we're good to go! Thanks for protecting the interests of the Foundation!

Grace Marion seems to take it badly, but at least she says it's an "informal group":
Grace Marian And of course any informal group of members can invite anyone they please (even plants) for an casual get-together. Sorry kids, but your whining and empty threats, while entertaining and good for giggles, are baseless.

The question remains: why is this informal group being told who the official candidates are before some board members know?
One answer that fits the facts: Keep KBOO KBOO is not an informal group. It's a group fronting as grassroots but pushing the interests already in power at KBOO to keep control of the station while appearing to have a democratic front.
