Press**Watch for September 13, 2001


As you might expect, I have changed the original topic for this week’s program in order to address the catastrophic events of September 11th. I want to focus on several aspects of the tragedy, namely, its long-term impact, its misuse by the Bush regime for jingoistic purposes, and its inevitability in view of US imperial violence over the past fifty years. Some of you have lost loved ones in the airliner attacks, and I will honor your grief with the following statement: This program has always exposed and attacked US imperialism in its various guises, with the express purpose of preventing the sort of tragedy we are now witnessing. Nevertheless, those of you who are grieving for loved ones now will tend to hear my charges of inevitability as a defense of, or apology for, the suicide bombers. Nothing could be further from the truth; I condemn anticivilian actions, whether they come from the bellies of US B-52s, or from the cockpits of commandeered civilian aircraft. It is my purpose, by outlining the harsh truth, to prevent further bloodshed on both sides of the imperium; yet, if you are in grief, this is not the time to listen to such analysis. Those of you who fit this description should now tune out KBOO radio and, if you choose, tune in in approximately twenty minutes. I am not saying this for dramatic effect; I simply believe that I have an obligation to bring this viewpoint to the airwaves, and I also feel for those of you who are in pain; I am serious; tune this out now.



For those of you who feel up to an anarcho-syndicalist and historically critical view of current events, stay tuned for the sort of dissent that is tacitly banned from the corporate-owned media. My surprise at the attacks did not stem from the assumption that they would never occur–I was merely shocked, as everyone was, by the sudden and terrifying loss of life. Given the simplicity of the attack, and the gravity of US provocations around the world for decades, it is remarkable that there have been so few major acts of violence on US soil. In the wake of the US destruction of democracy in Iran in 1954, for example, the CIA set up torture dungeons to aid the rule of the US puppet, the Shah. Here I use the word “torture dungeon” in a specific sense; the world saw, after the fall of the Shah’s regime, that underground prisons had been constructed, in which dissidents were tortured using information passed along by the CIA. The US also tortured thousands of Vietnamese citizens under the Phoenix assassination program, and the only aftermath of that program in the US so far has been the tiresome apologetics appearing in print from its main perpetrators. I could go back further, and point out that the US firestormed Tokyo during the Second World War with the express purpose of civilian annihilation–indeed, that was the effect of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, bombs dropped as the Japanese government sued for surrender terms, bombs dropped to impress the Soviets and to satisfy scientific curiosity as to their efficiency as war weapons. More recently, the US set up an entire mercenary army in Nicaraguan, Costa Rican and Honduran territory, igniting a war made even more horrific by the CIA’s printed exhortations to engage in terrorist anticivilian warfare; and of course there is the unresolved legacy of the attempted genocide of the original peoples on this continent, and the ongoing refusal to pay reparations for the legacy of the abduction and enslavement of the peoples of Africa. Yet, since I have walked this earth, I have seen no vast revenge schemes perpetrated by any of these aggrieved groups. But on Tuesday, 9-1-1 day, violence came to these shores. In the memory of those wounded and dead, we have an obligation to ask ourselves how to prevent any further such carnage.

The answer cannot lie in escalation–that is exactly what the hypocritical US envoys have always said to factions in Palestine and Northern Ireland, and it’s time we took our own medicine. For the US, we could start by acknowledging, and beginning to remedy, the damage and horror and rage that centuries of US corporate imperialism have wreaked.

Of course, we cannot do that under the current regime–which is why President-Select George Bush Junior, and all his accomplices in stealing the election, along with the five corrupted members of the Supreme Court, must be arrested. Fat chance of that, you’re thinking–but what if it did happen? We could have a real election if we had international observers, free press access for legitimate candidates, and a ban on paid election advertising. Then, perhaps, we could start spending our money on important things, like remediating ecological damage and global warming, and paying war reparations to imperial victim states and groups, et cetera.

In the meantime, we on the left are faced with yet another situation in which we must agitate to stop war hysteria. This is the time, more than any other, to support independent people’s media, our only hope against the increasing assault on civil liberties. Already, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute is calling for curtailment of civil liberties, and the FBI is loudly whining that they should have legal status for the Carnivore computer snooping program. We must not allow ourselves to be intimidated by the calls for revenge; we must speak out against war now, as never before, as we see that even as yesterday, the Bush regime was eagerly expanding a juicy list of resource-rich countries to attack. I congratulate the Women in Black for stepping out publicly yesterday, to counter war hysteria. We must all follow their example, in every public and private venue, or we will find ourselves soon living in Orwell’s Oceania.

I’m writing today to relay my gratitude for you: for your passionate intelligence in programming, your fearless and powerful analyses, your tireless efforts to produce something meaningful and dynamic– and particularly, I salute those of you who are using your talents to confront the murderous explosion of White supremacism. We work to get the news out on so many topics that are so urgent now–the climate emergency, the monstrous corruption of our billionaire-centric economy, the ponderous, rumbling movement of the Pentagon towards a new world war. But, as they say, for Black men, “this is the house that is on fire.” We direct our efforts to stop the mass murder of our friends, family, and comrades. I am humbled to be a part of it. So, as we conduct our membership drive, I want you all to know that you are my heroes. Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart, for being the brave brilliant warriors that you are. Thank you.

Mitchell, you’re a delusional crank. Your truther conspiracy group is full of people with “white supremacist” contacts, you yourself hobnobbed with Nazi friendly Captain May until 2011, and you’ve used your so called radio program to push antisemite conspiracy propaganda. Oh and no one’s forgotten that you’re a STRATFOR customer. Yeah, you must really be scared of official propaganda. /snark
