The KRAB NebulaA KRAB-FM enthusiast with a personal history with the station that goes back to 1968, is working to document some of the history of KRAB. A significant part of that history was the creation of the KRAB Nebula, of which KBOO was a part. " KRAB served as a national role model, stimulating the formation of twelve "KRAB Nebula" stations across the country", which started community radio in the United States. Clever Call LettersIt's said that KRAB's founder, Lorenzo Milham, had a knack for coming up with some witty names for the stations he helped start. Among them were KCHU, WAIF, WORT, KDNA, KTAO, and KUSP, as well as KPOO and WYSO. Of these KRAB Nebula members, KBOO-FM was the one of first and, now, the last remaining station that KRAB helped start. Who Named KBOO?The official history of KBOO says that the call letters were selected based on a popular marijuana strain called "Berkeley Boo". However, the call letters were actually selected by the FCC. The group in Portland working to set up a KRAB-type operation in Portland asked the FCC to approve one of several possible call letters: KBOO, KZEN, KAZU, KAMA, KVAS, and six other possible combinations. The final selection was done by the hippie radical dope fiends at the FCC.

Site Ops may want to move this post to the KBOO-ancient history section, where I thought I was posting it.
