A KBOO Facebook review that hit too close for comfort

Two year old review on KBOO's Facebook page, and responses it got. Best illustration of how KBOO is/was alienating their target audience.
Link and name omitted for obvious reasons. Can be found on Facebook:

Listened last night to a song called, "what if we all stopped paying taxes". Today they were celebrating Sanders expansion of Medicare (what do you think pays for that?) while interspersing clips of Hillary in a separate interview on her book, implying that she's against his proposal. And having the gall to say she was attacking him, when his rebuttal was far more angry! You guys are as dishonest as Fox News, and then you ask for pledges? Who do you think pledges? People who feel a duty to pay their taxes and take care of their citizens and bring each other together, or selfish softbois with internalized misogyny? So done listening to your radio. Let me know when you become responsible journalists again.

Matthew Bristow I'm sorry you rate this station 1 star for that. "They" is not one person named "KBOO" but, rather, KBOO is literally hundreds upon hundreds of people all taking turns making community radio happen.

So, yes, you can tune in at 5pm weekdays and listen to a news broadcast with high journalistic standards. Then, you can tune in to a show at 8pm featuring gamelan music--a traditional instrumental ensemble of Indonesia. The next day you can hear an hour and a half of folk music. Later that morning, you can listen to a political opinion talk show. If you dislike an opinion during that show you can call in to the air room and they will put you on to express your opinion on-air. Next, a show in Spanish dedicated to bringing contemporary music of Latin America and the world.

On another day you can listen in to the longest running feminist news and public affairs radio show. On another day you can tune in to a Gospel hour, followed by an Islamic Hour, followed by a Pagan [edit: New Age] hour, followed by a Dutch or Italian or Slavic hour, followed by a Jewish hour, followed by a Persian hour, followed by a Latina hour, etc. If later that night you hear one DJ play one song you don't like, I don't believe that then negates everything that happened before that.

I heard the same story twice during prime radio times. Around 8 am, and 5 pm. What's the priorities here?

I called into the wrong number to complain at the time (the pledge number).

I think you may be referring to a show called Democracy Now!, by Amy Goodman. It's one of the few not produced by KBOO volunteers. It airs on weekdays from 7-8am and again from 4-5pm. The reason it airs twice is because KBOO is a democratically run operation. The members made it a priority to run twice daily because then most people get a chance to listen at least once. It's also common procedure (for all stations) to run a news headline/story more than once in a day.

I think I get your point of one radio host speaking in support of Medicare for All (paid by taxes) and then another radio host playing a song that says "what if we all stopped paying taxes?" It sounds contradictory if you listen to it as one entity saying both things. Do you get my point about how one host only speaks for themselves, not the other host and definitely not the entire station?

That's what you're playing as you're asking for pledges. I would think kboo would be playing what it thought is most representative of its station during that time. "This is what you're paying for". And I'm not into splicing clips of our primary democratic presidential candidates that are unrelated to each other, and then repeatedly blatantly favoring one over the other. Democracy Now or not, not my thing. ✌🏻

It's not "you" though. And it's not "me" playing something. It's not any one person or even group of people. The station isn't an entity that controls programming. It's literally hundreds of people (all volunteers!) playing whatever they want. Do you g…See More

Kboo used to be my channel, so when I moved back to portland I tuned back in. In 3 for 3 tune ins I was disappointed with the content. I remember what kboo is capable of, and a good first step to growth is listening vs. being an echo chamber.

Splices one comment Hillary said about Bernie during a lengthy interview about her book into a story about his Medicare bill - insinuating that she's commenting on his proposal- deserves Pulitzer?? Do you see the dishonesty in that kind of reporting? I like some of the stuff she's done, but I was appalled by that story.

I left this review not to be a dick, but to give kboo a check on itself. I cared to leave a review because a radio station is a public platform that shapes opinion, which comes with a responsibility to present information (during peak listening times) that is honest, and doesn't alienate people.

Matthew starts being an asshole:

I get it, you are very sensitive and defensive for Hillary Clinton. But the level of irony and hypocrisy is truly remarkable. I'm listening to you splicing one (tone policing) comment into some highly questionable representative review of the entirety of KBOO. Why is the KBOO Youth Collective now guilty by association? Is the KBOO Mujeres Bravas (Brave Women) collective now indefinitely tainted because you heard something Clinton say about Sanders in a way you disliked on a show one day that KBOO volunteers don't even produce? How are they supposed to grow and get better when they did nothing wrong? I believe that you are committed to not comprehending this, or are being dishonest and unfair. And you've given the 500+ KBOO volunteers on the 100+ independently produced programs no constructive suggestions or clearly communicated standards by which they can be seen as worthy of more than one star.

Dude, if you want to hear what I'm saying, I will engage in a discussion. But this is just getting pointless. Accept that I gave it a bad review for what I think are good reasons and move on. It's clear I would never get through until you're ready to hear what I have to say vs. getting defensive so I'm signing off. I'm not going to explain or defend myself to deaf ears. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ouch.
Bristow may no longer be a board member but he's still involved with the station. The new board seems to be moving away from defensive unprofessional knee jerk flakiness. One of the faithful remarks like a true believer:
Adam Campbell
Thank you, Matthew. I've loved KBOO since I woke up in the 90s. Can't wake us all up. There are plenty of like-minded folks who support what KBOO has been doing for 50 years! Cheers to 50 more years of great diversity and journalistic integrity coming out of KBOO (and thanks to KBOO for syndicating Democracy NOW, since it's the best there is, God bless Amy Goodman.)
