Don't think they made it halfway. Maybe the counter didn't update and they're really almost at $65,000. Meanwhile, at Facebook, they try not to sound desperate: Sad to say, but if membership has been dropping, I can't see how it's going to pick up. Unless they have an angel donor at the last minute.

New post at Indymedia from "KBOO" regarding today's radio program, containing the following howler:
"4:00 The Thom Hartmann Show
5:00 The KBOO Evening News - volunteer produced, locally-focused newscast (with special guest Thom Hartmann!)"
The Inner Party loves Thom Hartmann. The Inner Party has always loved Thom Hartmann.

Don't think they made it halfway. Maybe the counter didn't update and they're really almost at $65,000. Are they reading this forum? Looks like someone did something. Early afternoon they came close to the 62.5k figure: 61,586 - 58,076 = 3,510 in three and a half hours? That's half what they should be averaging per day. I don't buy it. They got an angel to step in and save face for them. Let's see how much money that angel is made of.

Does somebody audit these figures, or do they have the option of making them up?

Checks by myself and others throughout the day shows no updates. Last check around 7pm and it still says Donations as of 10/19/2013, 2:00 pm: $73,063 That's over 24 hours. OTOH Ani might be busy...moving TV's : The adventures of those Zany Kbots!

Any chance ani will give away kboo tickets to people for helping, surely she would never do that right? Or maybe she'd get them slots at the "volunteer" booth.

Of course no one updated the figures today. Staff doesn't care about Sunday, those hosts speak Spanish and stuff. Just let them do their thing and we can say we serve the Spanish speaking community.
Why would we spend staff time overseeing things, providing feedback, training, etc? Sunday is a wasted day on KBOO and doesn't really serve any particular community, because staff doesn't see to it that it does.
It's a shame, there is a huge Latino population in this town that could be served by Sunday programming, but it's just folks doing their own thing for themselves and friends, with no oversight.

Does somebody audit these figures, or do they have the option of making them up? The meter on the KBOO website is manually updated by the membership director during his working hours. I think there was a Grateful Dead special on Saturday and that is why the numbers would be updated on the weekend, the membership director would have been there. Also, the meter is for pledges that come in through the phones and the website and is not the money collected, although it will include a large amount that was donated on the spot. KBOO has a high fulfillment rate, and usually gets over 90% of the pledges paid within a few days to a couple of weeks. They keep a handwritten running log per program on dollars pledged. Each program is given a goal to reach. Staff, usually the membership director now but used to be the program director, will verify the math. That's what the membership director will post on the drive meter. On Friday the 18th, it was public affairs day and that usually brings in a huge day. So does the Grateful Dead special, and every Saturday during the Bluegrass show. So for there to be $3510 in a few hours is very much a reality. Esp if the programming was good and there was a donor doing a matching pledge. Yeh, the figures are checked during the drive on a constant basis. What really is important is the money that shows up on the financial statements, that shows what KBOO actually received to pay the bills with. Usually after the first week of the drive it slows down. There may be a spike during a special, but most of the money is made in the first few days. The membership director will keep all data from each drive. He will plug in the pledges, the pledge payments, and what was pledged for each program. From that data he will put together a pretty spiffy report that shows historical information on how well various programs will bring in membership pledges during the drives. Also, how well each drive will do historically so they can decide how much to make the goal, how long to run the drive and what type of special programming to have and not to have. Also, even if certain programming doesn't bring in much for pledge dollars, it usually stays on the schedule such as the Sunday Hispanic programming and the weekday Democracy Now programming. A fun note: the Abe & Joe show usually does well bringing in pledges, esp when Joe tells the listeners he is naked!

@drive Facts Appreciate what you're saying. But while that 3+k in 3 hours is possible, it doesn't seem currently probable. The average has otherwise been near the estimated average. Not above. And between 10/19/2013 and 10/21/2013 it's dropped. If it keeps dropping, they'll be lucky to break 100k.
It gives great satisfaction Ani & co aren't getting the validation of a slam dunk. They're going to have to work for this one bully someone to do the work for them on this one.

KBOO kept up the pace it needed for 10 days, which is very credible. The second full week of a pledge drive is much more difficult. If I recall, pledges were at $73k on Saturday afternoon, almost 48 hours later they are $78k. That's $5k in 2 days (granted, includes a sunday, typically the worst performing day) but still, even if it was just Monday numbers, that would be a slow down. They'll be lucky to crack $100k (which would still be very good).

If you know you can't raise funds with your own unprofessional public affairs programming, bring in a bunch of pre-recorded NOT LOCAL speakers to get the big bucks, like today. Then go back to shouting about how local is so much better, and how your listeners want local programming even though you have to play non-local programming to get them to donate.

That's the plan. That's been the plan all along, even way back in the spring and early summer.
Thom has been very professional and not taken sides in the dispute. No matter how KBOO handles the "experiment" he comes out looking like a rose, having done everything he could to support local radio. No one can fault his on air pitches, they were well done. And having Hartmann on the air will most likely boost the total raised by perhaps 10K. But I've been listening, and the phones aren't ringing much behind the pitching.
Remember, we aren't going to see a bankrupt KBOO anytime soon. It's going to be re-energized and appear healthy for a while. Then the people lulled into giving money the first time will start dropping away, the underwriting energy will flag due to a lack of development skills, and it's back to the long term trend. They can fritter away the reserves and loose money for a while yet and there won't be anyone round to say "no". Not worth watching too closely right now IMHO.
