When Clear Channel killed KPOJ's progressive talk radio, thousands of Oregonians lost access to a lot of great progressive talk. But we didn’t take it lying down. We pulled together and built the Save KPOJ movement. We spoke out with one loud voice and we helped Carl Wolfson get back behind the mic, with an internet radio show. But now, it's time to take this to the next level. Progressive talk radio is coming to the FM dial in Portland. I'm excited to tell you about 91.1 KXRY -- to be known as XRAY.FM. It'll be an awesome combination of progressive talk radio and music from the Northwest. It's a local, not-for-profit radio station. Thank Jefferson. Yes KBOO 90.7 is progressive talk, music, and almost all of it is local programming created by and for the community. For more than 4 decades KBOO has been connecting Portlanders, creating community, and tilting Portland to the progressive. Portland wouldn't be what it is without KBOO. And the KBOO membership drive starts end of next week. We need ALL the community connections and community radio we can get, so please, everyone do your part to support KBOO. The recent ruckus is receding with the election of a great board who take office this month.

Grace Marian Actually, Carla, your headline is incorrect: KBOO Community Radio has been broadcasting for 45 years bringing progressively more tin foil laced patriot group propaganda repackaged for the radical Portland area and beyond. Still congrats to XRAY.FM. I think Portland is big enough to support two progressive stations! Fixed that for her. |

I was wondering how many local organizations would snag up the few NCE low frequency licenses that the FCC opened up. It will be interesting to watch KBOO's membership (and income) dwindle as more people abandon KBOO in favor of XRAY. The good thing is, KBOO may be able to sell a frequency or 2 to the new XRAY as they get bigger. This will help XRAY reach more listeners and will fund KBOO's dysfunction for awhile longer when the community is done wasting time & money on them. It's a win-win! Not sure how Grace thinks Progressive = Progressive-Radical The same way Theresa Mitchell thought working with the Ghosttroup loons would save Portland from being nuked. *yawn* I think what Grace means is all alternative lefty types. To her credit she doesn't go into hyper hyphen mode, but she's given us a clue to the politics of the people she does work with: they aren't radicals. Radicals usually waste no time correcting you if you call them 'progressives'.  |

KBOO is pissed at Blue Oregon! You see, Blue Oregon got over 5,000 people to sign a petition saying they'd listen to Thom Hartmann on KBOO. Blue Oregon folks moved on and found a willing partner to air Thom Hartmann (and Carl Wolfson) in K-XRAY www.blueoregon.com/2013/10/kxry-progressive-radio-back/After a board election in which all those damn corporatists lost, the Kbots realized the corporatists were right and they really were out of money. Sitting around smoking cigs in front of the BOO, someone had a great idea, "let's bring on Thom Hartmann for one hour a day, for 3 months. Didn't Blue Oregon get 5,000 people to say they'd listen? I bet if we do it before the pledge drive, they'll give us lots of money. Let's get Kari and Carla to help promote it!" Alas, it seems when you let the hounds loose on Blue Oregon message boards, they aren't so eager to help a few months later when KBOO is in a bind. Rumor has it KBOO is pissed, can't believe Blue Oregon isn't helping, they promised! (of course, no one actually ever spoke with them, replied to them, cooperated with them, so there were no promises, but...) |

Not much to add except KBOO's run by adult children. They can't believe the people they attacked and gave the "Fitch Treatment" aren't helping them. Reminds me of villians in cheesy kids shows caught in their own schemes who plead with the heroes to save them. But(probably) not evil, just emotionally stunted.
And dumb. Can't forget dumb. Any other org would have done the obvious thing by now, issued a public statement with an apology to smooth things over. Not just for Blue Oregon, but for Fitch, the Silverman list thing, Mitchell acting out at Indy, Lisa and Tommy hacking/phishing escapades, etc.
But not KBOO. They're going to stick to their guns until the end, insisting they've done nothing wrong....

If he really wanted to build community and not have it tainted by his past he'd organize as a silent partner. |
